FLOUR POWER; PAIR GO SPATULA TO SPATULA.

Byline: Karen Thacker Community columnist

Gene and Ann Haffe love working in the kitchen together, but when it comes time for the My Favorite My Favorite is an independent synthpop band from Long Island, New York. ``He got second place and I'm getting nervous,'' Ann admits. ``And I'm not giving him my recipe.''

It was already her recipe Gene started with last year, adding his own variations and touches.

``He sits there and asks for my advice,'' Ann said. ``I guess it's a compliment that he uses my basic recipe.''

For years its been Ann who entered baking contests at the fair. Last year she had 30 entries and this year she's down to 27: 22 items in the regular baking contest and six in the special baking contest (chocolate dessert, cheesecake, any fruit pie, cake, any other pie and favorite dessert).

``I try something different each year,'' she said.

Trying something different is what makes her baking so great, Gene said.

``Ann never stays to a recipe. She tweaks it a little and can do wonders.''

But Gene, a production engineer by trade, actually spends a lot of time in the kitchen as well. He even has friends handing over old recipes asking the couple to try them.

This years he's entering three categories at the special baking contest - men's baking night, favorite salsa and of course, favorite cheesecake.

``I love to cook, but I'm not much of a baker. I love to experiment on the top of the stove and she bakes in the oven,'' he said.

Ann is frequently asked to bake for parties and special events for family and friends.

``It's Ann who's got a talent with it and she needs to go into business,'' he added.
