Superfund activity at the site is now in the operation and maintenance phase which includes maintenance of the pond's cap and drainage systems. Public comment on the proposed deletion was solicited from May 3, 1995 to June 2, 1995. No comments were received.

The 32-acre Alpha Chemical Coporation Superfund site is used for the manufacture of polyester resin for fiberglass manufacturers. Primary contaminants of concern were volatile organic compounds, mainly ethylbenzene Ethylbenzene is an organic chemical compound which is an aromatic hydrocarbon. Its major use is in the petrochemical industry as an intermediate compound for the production of styrene, which in turn is used for making polystyrene, a commonly used plastic material. , xylene xylene (zī`lēn) or dimethylbenzene (dī'mĕthəlbĕn`zēn), C6H4(CH3)2 , and styrene. EPA placed the site on the NPL in September 1983. A study by FDEP in 1983 determined that groundwater contamination was confined to the surficial aquifer. Studies by Alpha Resins Corporation (ARC), formerly known as Alpha Chemical Corporation, further determined the extent of the contamination and evaluated appropriate cleanup technologies. In 1988, EPA, with FDEP's concurrence, selected a cleanup remedy which included placing a protective cover over a small unlined pond to prevent further migration of contaminants and long-term groundwater and surface water monitoring.

ARC designed and implemented the cleanup remedy under the authority and direction of EPA and FDEP. The cleanup included removal of liquids from the unlined pond and placement of clean clay soil in the pond In the Pond is a 1998 novel by Ha Jin, who has also written Under the Red Flag, Ocean of Winds, and Waiting. Groundwater and surface water monitoring confirmed that they concentration of contaminants that were confined to the isolated locations decreased to levels below the cleanup level established for the site. ARC has recorded appropriate deed restrictions for the use of the property.

EPA will conduct a five-years review at the site to ensure that the remedy remains effective. Deletion of the site from the NPL does not preclude eligibility for subsequent Superfund-financed actions if future conditions warrant such actions.
