FLORIDA KEYS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION ISSUES STATEMENT
TAVERNIER, Fla., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- With the endorsement of the board of trustees of Florida Keys Electric Cooperative, the following statement is issued by Charles Russell, general manager, to FKEC members and customers from the county line to the Seven Mile Bridge:
 1. FKEC appreciates the patience and the spirit of cooperation of the people in the Keys during this emergency as FKEC, FPL, CES and neighboring electric cooperatives work to restore power to the Keys.
 2. There is extensive damage to the FPL transmission line -- crews are working on replacing broken insulators and re-hanging transmission line. Approximately two to four miles of line can be completed each day. We expect this work to be completed within a week at which time we will have full power again. Our target date is September 2nd or 3rd.
 3. Minimal power will be restored today throughout the FKEC service areas that can accept service to over 20,000 people. Minimal power will only continue to be available providing that people:
-- Do not use air conditioners.
-- Do not use electric stoves.
-- Do not use electric water heaters.
 -- Do not use dryers.
 4. Minimal power is to be only for:
 -- Refrigerators
 -- Fans
 -- Minimum indoor lighting
-- Microwaves for limited cooking -- please use outdoor gas or
charcoal stoves or go to local restaurants.
-- Washing machines can be used in accordance with FKAA water
 restrictions.
 5. We are asking people to remind their neighbors of the need to conserve power -- the emergency is not over. Please call FKEC if you need to report misuse of power.
 6. If the load on the system becomes too great because people are abusing the available power and the demand on the system becomes too great, FKEC will restrict the use of power by rotating outages for up to four hours on a circuit basis (3 to 4 miles of a service area). This outage rotation will continue until the crisis is over. The circuit outage rotation will begin with the circuit which has been receiving power for the longest period of time.
 7. As minimal power is being restored, FKEC is placing emphasis on restoring full transmission power. Additional crews are working; supplies are being rushed by helicopter.
 8. Thanks again for your cooperation in our efforts to provide service to all of FKEC's members.
 9. FKEC has received full cooperation from City Electric System. Since Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 5:24 p.m., FKEC has received power from CES and last night we could have gotten as much as 9.5 MW. We have three crews from CES working on the transmission and distribution line restoration.
