and poorly landscaped ramps in the Valley and sought the help of Caltrans and, for private funding, the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley.

Caltrans waived some construction permit fees for the pilot project, and nearby Galpin Motors donated $50,000. The pilot program will also receive $50,000 from Hertzberg's office fund and an expected contribution of the same from Anheuser-Busch.

The fourth expected contributor of about $50,000 is the nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

Valley Jobs Recovery Corp., established to help the Valley's economy, said Saul Gomez, director of the Economic Alliance.

Galpin owner Bert Boeckmann said he was thinking along the same lines as Hertzberg to improve the beauty of the area. When he learned of the project, he jumped aboard, offering to contribute $50,000.

``I've been all over the world, most of the freeways' on-ramps and off- ramps look very nice,'' said Boeckmann. ``In L.A. city they look bad, and in the Valley they look horrible.''

``I think (this project) will be wonderful,'' Boeckmann said, adding that he would like to extend the landscaping theme to Roscoe Boulevard.

The project improvements, which should be done by the end of September, will include palm trees, various flowers, ivy and plants native to the San Fernando Valley.

The project - coordinated by the Economic Alliance - is hoped to be the first of 30 such beautification projects in the Valley at intersections along the Ventura, Hollywood and San Diego freeways.

Most of the upgrades will consist of landscaping for on- and off-ramps and improvement of some undercrossings.
