``They know it's a major artery and they're trying to get it opened as fast as they can,'' Caltrans spokeswoman Marsha Milovich said Monday.

Until Wednesday, detours are set up southbound at the junction of Highways 395 and 14 near Ridgecrest, sending motorists along Highway 395 to either Highway 58 and then on to Highway 14, or continuing on Highway 395 to Interstate 15.

Northbound motorists are advised to turn east on Highway 58 at Mojave, then go north on Highway 395 until it joins Highway 14 north of Red Rock Canyon.
