FLINTRIDGE S.H. STILL HAS SOMETHING LEFT MOST KEY PLAYERS RETURN, MAKING IT A CONTENDER AGAIN.

The departure is one of the first things First Things is a monthly ecumenical journal concerned with the creation of a "religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society" (First Things website).  mentioned when discussing the Flintridge Sacred Heart The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity

head coach Nancy Tinkham, or standout Kelly Smiland, but rather the move of the team that eliminated the Tologs in last year's playoffs.

``The good news for us is Notre Dame Academy Notre Dame Academy may refer to:

got moved to another division,'' Flintridge Sacred Heart coach Shelli Orlandini said of the team that beat the Tologs in the Southern Section Div. IV-AA semifinals. ``That's good news for us.''

The bad news for Flintridge Sacred Heart opponents, however, is that despite a few notable changes, so much remains the same for the Tologs, who went 25-3 last season. Flintridge Sacred Heart returns seven of nine of last year's core players, including four starters, making the Tologs the Daily News' top-ranked team and a favorite to ensure area teams are not left out of championship weekend for a second consecutive year.

``With everyone they have back, they're the top team,'' Harvard-Westlake of Studio City coach Jess jesse, jess

. Senior twins Rachel and Rebecca Salvo return to starting jobs as outside hitter and middle blocker, respectively. Senior opposite Jakie Beeton is another returning starter, appearing to be at full strength after a shoulder injury sidelined her for part of last season.

Despite Tinkham leaving to coach at Village Christian, the Tologs have a coach familiar with the program and its winning ways. Shelli Orlandini - Sam's mom - coached Flintridge Sacred Heart's junior varsity junior varsity

Under Orlandini's guidance, the Tologs went undefeated in this summer's Pasadena Poly summer league, beating teams such as defending Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:

The competition should remain tough for the Tologs during Mission League play. Harvard-Westlake, once a regular in the state playoffs, missed the postseason for the first time in program history last year, but has a talented young group led by Katherine Quinn and Brittany Julian that is capable of restoring the Wolverines to prominence.

``Harvard-Westlake and Flintridge are going to be really tough to beat,'' said Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks coach Shannon Tuttle, whose team finished third in the league last season, but like second-place Louisville of Woodland Hills, was hit hard by graduation. ``It's going to be a tough league, it always is.''

Tight races are also expected in the Foothill and Marmonte leagues The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule. .

Defending Foothill champion Valencia, anchored by UC Irvine-bound setter Taryn Robertson, returns the core of a lineup that reached the Div. I-AA quarterfinals. New coaches at Canyon, Saugus and Hart of Newhall leave some uncertainty about the rest of the league, but last year's runner-up Canyon has high expectations with five returnees.

Experience is plentiful at Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Quartz Hill is coming off its third Golden League championship in five years, but this year's title appears up for grabs after the Rebels graduated the majority of last season's lineup. Lancaster and Highland of Palmdale are among the contenders to dethrone de·throne

a Quartz Hill team that still features standout senior middle blocker Tera Henn. Parity abounds in the City Section, where Verdugo Hills of Tujunga coach Will Reinhart estimates at least 10 teams have a shot at this year's title.

Verdugo Hills, Chatsworth and Granada Hills, all eliminated in the quarterfinals, were the only Valley representatives to advance past the second round of last year's City playoffs. Taft of Woodland Hills should join that group this year as a top threat from the West Valley League.

Verdugo Hills, which cruised to an undefeated Sunset Six season before being eliminated by Carson in last year's quarterfinals, features the area's only two returning All-City players in senior middle blocker Crystal Perryman and senior setter Jennifer Espinolda. The Dons will get a good idea of where they rank when they play nonleague matches today against Granada Hills and next week against defending City runner-up Venice.

``The City is very open this year,'' Reinhart said. ``It's a lot like last year.''
