FLEMING FINALIZES FLORIDA SUPERMARKET PURCHASE

 OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Fleming Companies (NYSE: FLM) announced today that it has finalized, effective Sept. 27, the acquisition of 16 Florida stores and certain assets from Florida Supermarkets, Inc. The purchase price was not released but, as part of the purchase, Fleming deposited approximately $5 million in a local bank to pay trade creditors of the company.
 Separately, Fleming said that it expects to acquire the remaining 51 percent of Big W Supermarkets of Florida, Inc. in the near future. Fleming owns 49 percent of Big W, which operates six supermarkets, including one in Boca Raton and five in the Naples area.
 Fleming plans to combine the 16 Florida Supermarket stores and the six Big W stores, all of which currently operate under the Woolley's Fine Foods banners, into a single retail organization, Fleming Supermarkets of Florida, Inc. Projected annual sales of the 22 stores are approximately $200 million.
 Fleming supplies food, food-related products and retail services to more than 4,800 stores in 36 states, the Caribbean, Mexico and other Central and South American countries.
