-- A small brush fire Monday morning near Vasquez Rocks drew a full response from firefighters worried that wind, low humidity and high temperatures would whip it into a wildfire.

The blaze broke out shortly before 9 a.m. and burned just two acres near the southbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway between Escondido Canyon Road and Agua Dulce Canyon Road, Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Bill Minick said.

Six engines and two helicopter crews doused the fire within an hour.

Nobody was injured and no damage was reported, but traffic backed up on the northbound freeway where two lanes were closed to accommodate firefighting equipment.

A Red Flag warning A Red Flag Warning is a forecast warning issued by the United States National Weather Service to tell area firefighting and land management agencies that conditions are ideal for wildland fire ignition and propagation.  -- meaning heightened fire danger -- was issued Sunday by the National Weather Service and will continue through at least this evening.

"It's warm here, and windy and dry -- not a good combo," Minick said.

Staffing is up at local fire stations because of the Red Flag warning, Minick said.

In addition to water tenders and patrols, a five-engine strike team was assigned to the area because of the increased fire danger.

"They stand by in case they're needed," he said.

The temperatures hit 94 Monday in Santa Clarita and 87 in the Antelope Valley, with gusty gust·y

The North County region has received just a fraction of its normal seasonal rainfall -- 5 inches in Santa Clarita compared with the season average of 18, and less than an inch in the Antelope Valley compared with the usual 4 or 5 inches, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (LACDPW) is responsible for the construction and operation of Los Angeles County's roads, building safety, sewerage, and flood control. .
