polished, nine-member classical Spanish dance troupe Andrea Del Conte Danza Espana has lured flamenco flamenco, Spanish music and dance typical of the Gypsy, or gitano. Flamenco dancing is characterized by colorful costumes, intense and erotic movements, stamping of the feet (zapateado), and clapping of the hands (palmada  dance fans to the modest, seventy-five-seat Thalia Spanish Theater in Queens. But this year, ticket sales were unusually brisk, and new faces filled the theater. The reason? Television. The tiny theater has enjoyed a long relationship with the cable giant. In the past, Time Warner donated money to a spring parks festival that included Thalia productions, Giaimo said. Time Warner representatives visited the theater after that, and their offer of additional support translated into air time.

The ads couldn't have come at a better time. "In the past, we presented flamenco once a week with a Spanish-language play the other two nights," Giaimo said. When the theater couldn't extend the run of a play, Danza Espana filled the void, performing three nights a week from January through early March. "The ads really helped us get the bigger audiences we needed," Giaimo said.

In fact, the theater, formed in 1977 to meet the cultural needs of the city's rapidly growing Hispanic community, has long depended on dance to attract diverse audiences. "We've always presented plays and operettas in Spanish," says Giaimo. "But everyone understands dance."
