``The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'' director Peter Jackson on Tuesday became the first person to ever be nominated nom·i·nate

Jackson has now been nominated for the DGA DGA Directors Guild of America (movie directors union)

``The guild awards mean a lot because they are voted on by people who do the same job,'' Jackson said in a telephone interview from New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. . ``What I like about them is that they are very simple awards, very pure with less politics involved.''

Jackson did not seem overly concerned about his chances of winning the DGA award after losing to Ron Howard (``A Beautiful Mind'') two years ago and Rob Marshall (``Chicago'') last year.

``The great thing about awards is that you don't have to think about it too much - it's up to other people to do the voting,'' he said. ``To get the nomination is always a huge thrill regardless of whoever wins.''

Meanwhile, ``Lost in Translation'' director Coppola also made some DGA history. The daughter of Francis Ford Coppola Noun 1. Francis Ford Coppola - United States filmmaker (born in 1939)

(``The Godfather'') became the first offspring of a previous DGA winner and only the fifth woman to score a nomination.

``I'm thrilled to be nominated by my peers and to be in such company,'' she said in a statement. ``This is a real honor.''

Since ``Seabiscuit'' was released in July, first-time nominee Ross did not expect much during awards season. He had expressed surprise at even being nominated for a Producers Guild of America award on Monday and did not express much hope of making the DGA's final five.

``I'm knocked out,'' Ross said Tuesday. ``This one was a real surprise. It's become kind of a cliche but it honestly does feel different being recognized by people who get up in the morning and make movies every day. There's no better feeling.''

Both Ross and Coppola were nominated for what are only their second feature films as directors.

For Eastwood, the nomination for ``Mystic Mystic, rivers, United States

``It is a pleasure and an honor to be acknowledged by the Director's Guild among these talented filmmakers,'' Eastwood said in a statement. ``Working on 'Mystic River' with screenwriter Brian Helgeland, my longtime long·time

crew and a remarkable cast was a great experience that yielded a very satisfying result; I'm very happy that the movie has been embraced so warmly by critics and audiences.''

Weir's nomination for ``Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World'' follows previous nods for ``Witness,'' ``Dead Poets Society,'' and ``The Truman Show.'' He has never won.

The DGA's have historically been one of the most accurate barometers of which director will go on to win the Academy Award.

Only six times since 1949 has the DGA winner not won the Oscar, but two of those occasions have come within the last four years, including last year when Rob Marshall won the DGA prize for ``Chicago'' but Roman Polanski took home the Oscar for ``The Pianist.''

But awards expert Tom O'Neil Tom O'Neil is a showbiz journalist and television critic who often appears as a pundit on TV shows featuring pop culture content. He has also worked as a producer for the TV Land network, editorial director of magazine development for the Hearst Corporation, freelance writer for  said it's too soon to determine whether the DGA has lost some of its status as a precursor precursor /pre·cur·sor/ (pre´kur-ser) something that precedes. In biological processes, a substance from which another, usually more active or mature, substance is formed. In clinical medicine, a sign or symptom that heralds another.  to the Oscar, since the two groups share many of the same voters.

``I'm not sure if it's a trend yet, because we've only seen it in the last couple of years,'' said O'Neil, author of the book ``Movie Awards.''

The omission of ``Cold Mountain'' director Anthony Minghella was considered a major shock, since the film is up for eight Golden Globe Awards and has been thought of as an Oscar front-runner.

``This is a major trip-up for 'Cold Mountain,' '' O'Neil said. ``Never before has the winner of best picture at the Oscars failed to be nominated by the DGA. Those two awards usually line up at the Oscars.''
