The youngsters helped improve the community by painting school buildings and curbs, brightening mile markers on a 10-mile trail and planting trees at Santa Clarita's historic train station.

``It's probably the most noteworthy thing that each of them do for the community,'' said Jon Neeley, Scout leader A Scout Leader generally refers to the trained adult leader of a Scout unit. The terms used vary from country to country, over time, and with the type of unit. Roles

The Neeley boys are following in the footsteps of their father and two older brothers, who also have achieved Scouting's highest award.

``It's been a lifetime dream of mime,'' said David Neeley, 15. ``My two older brothers and my Dad have it. That inspired me.''

In order to earn the Eagle award, a Scout must progress through six ranks and acquire 21 badges. Fifteen of the badges are mandatory, such as first aid, citizenship, environmental science, personal management and personal fitness, which includes social, spiritual and academic elements.

But the biggest part of earning the highly respected title comes by completing a community service project.

``They are totally in charge of carrying out the project, from concept to completion,'' said Jon Neeley, adding that most of the boys and their volunteer assistants put in about 100 hours to complete their project. ``It's a great experience for young men.''

For his project, David Neeley planted 15 native trees - including seven oaks Seven Oaks (ISSN 1710-3061) is an online political magazine based in Vancouver, Canada. ``I always wanted to do something that would last a long time - that I can go back and see for the rest of my life,'' he said.

The trees were donated by three local nurseries. To help them thrive, David installed a temporary drip system that will give the trees 30 minutes of water a day until they mature enough to survive on their own.

The path is currently approximately 8 miles in length and generally runs in an east-west direction and closely follows the path of the Santa Clara River and Soledad , used by runners, walkers, joggers and equestrian groups.

``It was one of the more creative service projects,'' said Jon Neeley. ``It will allow all of the joggers and runners to gauge the distance that they are running, biking or walking.''

After choosing his service project, Jonathan Neeley got permission from city officials, who were appreciative of his interest and effort.

Michael Ian Clift, 13, painted the exterior of several portable classrooms at Placerita Junior High while his classmate, Adam Cannon Rich, 13, painted a portion of the school's gymnasium.

``The projects are their own design and thinking,'' said Jon Neeley. ``We encourage them to look around.''

Buildings painted by the two boys were in great disrepair, and so the improvements were welcomed, Neeley said.

``Not only are they serving the community, they are serving the very own school that they attend,'' he said.

Each of the boys had organized about 20 to 30 people who assisted in their project. Each project took about a total of 100 combined man-hours to complete.

Trevor Thomas Kavanagh, 15, cleaned and painted the curbs along 1,000 feet of the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. ``It seemed like a good project to contribute to,'' he said.

Kavanagh said that he often visits the campus to watch Hart High School football games and wanted to do something there.

``I'm real happy to finally get this award,'' said Kavanagh. ``It's something I always aimed for.''
