FIVE DIE WHEN CAR PLUNGES OFF ROAD; AGUA DULCE CRASH BLAMED ON SPEED.

Four young men and a teen-age girl were killed Thursday when their speeding car careened off the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley. , slammed into a mountain and rolled about 50 feet down an embankment.

Three carloads of friends stopped on the freeway near Vasquez Rocks Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is a 905 acre (3 km²) northern Los Angeles County, California USA park acquired by LA County government in the 1970s. ``The fourth car was trying to catch up with the other three cars when the driver lost control,'' said Assistant Chief Greg Augusta of the California Highway Patrol's Southern Division. After the crash, ``the drivers and passengers of the other vehicles came running back up the freeway.''

The driver, a 17-year-old girl from Highland, was taken by helicopter to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia. She died shortly after undergoing surgery, said hospital spokeswoman Janice Newbold.

Witnesses told investigators the four cars were racing south on the freeway about 1 p.m. when the rear car changed from the middle to the right lane in an apparent effort to catch up.

The black 1989 Acura Legend skidded on the pavement, veered onto the dirt shoulder and sailed off the side of the road into a hillside. Investigators estimated the car was traveling 85 to 90 mph.
