FIVE ARTISTS GRANTED $50,000 ALPERT AWARDS FELLOWSHIPS AT CALARTS.Byline: Daily News VALENCIA - Five artists in the prime of their careers were named Tuesday as winners of $50,000 fellowships at California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts known as CalArts U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S. . CalArts and the Herb Alpert Herbert "Herb" Alpert (born March 31, 1935 in Los Angeles, California) is an American musician most associated with the group variously known as Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass or as Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass or just TJB Foundation awarded the annual Alpert Awards to David Greenspan David Greenspan is an award winning American actor and playwright. In 1997 he received an Obie Award for his work in the off-broadway revival of Boys in the Band. An alumnus of New Dramatists, he has received playwriting fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial , a playwright, director and actor; Christian Marclay Christian Marclay (born 1955) is a visual artist and composer based in New York. Marclay is a former lecturer of video collage and sound at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland where he conducted a summer workshop. , a visual and sound artist; Lisa Nelson, choreographer, performer and videographer A person involved in the production of video material. Videographers shoot the images with a video camera (analog or digital) and may perform minimal or extensive editing of the resulting footage. ; RTMark, a group of computer artists; and Laetitia Sonami, a composer and performer. Established in 1994, the Alpert Awards are decided by independent panels in the five disciplines - dance, film and video, music, theater and the visual arts.
