"It was a comfortable start for us, but to be honest I never take anything for granted in games like this," said Kincaid. "I didn't look at it as Bangor team coming to play Ards - just that we were playing Amateur League opposition. "If you don't do things properly in these games then you can end up embarrassed, as I have experienced in the past. "As I told the players after the match, you just turn up in finals you have to earn your right by winning games like Saturday's one. "In cup competitions there is no point in coming in afterwards thinking 'I wish had done this or that.'" Kincaid also admitted to being pleased with the comprehensive victory, even without a string of prominent players missing. Darren Stirling, Darren Nixon, James Wilson, Gary Spence, James Wilson, James Wright, Lee Mudd and Stephen Doyle were all sidelined. One player who did make his first appearance of the season however was Darren Fitzgerald, coming back after a suspension carried over from last season. "It was his first game back and in all honesty a good game for him to come back into," Kincaid added. "He produced three very good finishes for his goals and we're pleased to have him back, he was busting to get playing again, as was Jimmy McIlhagga. "The thing is now that we have competition for places all over the park and I feel we have strengthened from last season." Also making his first appearance of the season - and in an Ards shirt - was former Linfield winger Mark Picking, who has signed up until the end of the year on loan from Ballymena United. "Mark didn't feel as if there was any light at the end of the tunnel for him at Ballymena. "He phoned me and said he would like to play for Ards, so when you get into that sort of situation the deal is usually easy to conclude." |
