FISKE STARTS FIRST GAME FOR CSUN.

Byline: Marc J. Spear Daily News Staff Writer

Sophomore quarterback Josh Fiske makes his first career start tonight when Cal State Northridge faces Portland State at the Portland Civic Stadium.

After a bye week, Fiske replaces All-American Aaron Flowers, sidelined at least three more weeks with a fractured right fibula fibula (fĭb`yələ): see leg.  he suffered Aug. 20 against Azusa-Pacific.

Flowers was No. 1 in the nation in total offense with 379.8 yards per game and has thrown for 1,519 yards and 10 TDs in four games this season. As for Fiske, he has completed 8 of 12 passes for one touchdown this season.

``I don't try to think about Aaron's numbers or what he has done in the past,'' said Fiske, 21. ``That will just make me think that I won't be able to execute. I'm thinking about what Josh Fiske can do and what he can do for the team. That is my main concern. I don't want to think about (replacing Flowers) and a lot of people have told me not to. I just got to go out there and play ball.

``It has been a dream for me to play college ball and I didn't think (a start) would come this soon. What happened to Aaron is Aaron ben Nisi was a Jewish ruler of the Khazars mentioned in the Khazar Correspondence. He reigned around the year 900 CE. Little is known about his reign. As with other Bulanid rulers, it is unclear whether Aaron was Khagan or Khagan Bek of the Khazars, although the latter is  bad, but I have to step in and do it. I'm really excited and I've been waiting for this since I (began playing) when I was 8 years old.''

Since Flowers was hurt during the game, Fiske was able to play against Azusa-Pacific, prepare longer for Portland State and get more comfortable with the offense. Also, it allowed red-shirt freshman quarterback Ryan Smith For the hockey player see Ryan Smyth.

chances to get some extra snaps as well.

``It's not good for Aaron Flowers,'' said CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  coach Jim Fenwick, who doesn't plan on changing the passing scheme. ``But if he is going to get hurt, that is the week to do it.''

Fiske said, ``That extra week helped me out a lot.''

Winless Portland State (0-4, 2-2) also has quarterback problems. Jimmy Blanchard (.529 completion percentage) isn't expected to play because of a bruised right knee and an ankle sprain ankle sprain Orthopedics A stretching of the ankle ligaments and/or muscles with swelling  that he suffered a 56-21 loss last week to Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. Blanchard will be replaced by Tyson Parsons Parsons, city (1990 pop. 11,924), Labette co., SE Kans.; inc. 1871. It is a shipping point for dairy products, grain, and livestock. Manufactures include ammunition, wire and paper products, plastics, and appliances.  (.443 completion percentage).

``Maybe we should both go into shotgun and say if you don't hit our quarterback, we won't hit yours,'' said CSUN coach Jim Fenwick, whose Matadors will be playing their Big Sky opener.

PSU PSU - power supply unit  also has key injuries to its three tailbacks and only Charles ``Chip'' Dunn, former standout at Pasadena's Muir High School, will play, despite a bruised elbow. The Vikings also haven't scored in the first half and have just seven points in the third quarter.

The Vikings also have turned the ball over 14 times, worst in the Big Sky.

``Defensively, we can't play 80 or 90 plays a game,'' Walsh said. ``They can't play half the time on our side of the field. A lot of the points that have been scored against us has been on a 35-40 yard field. That's an Arena League field. . . not college.''
