His workmate and friend Bob Robinson organised the first match which was held at Woodlands, Thirsk, a spot where Darren fished on many occasions.

Around 60 anglers from all over Teesside took part and many more since, and hundreds of pounds have been raised in his memory to fund the event's prizes.

Darren's mum Gillian, 53, of Skelton Road, Brotton, said: "My husband Bob and I are thrilled that the event is now in its third year and is now a popular annual event.

"Darren loved fishing and always enjoyed going to the Woodlands Lakes, at Carlton Minniot.

"He would have loved that this event was being held in his memory.

"He was a great lad who would do anything for anyone."

She said he began angling when he was about 10 and used to fish in ponds around Boosbeck.

As he got older, he went further afield to Saltburn, South Gare and Thirsk.

She added: "We think this has been a very fitting way to honour Darren's memory."

Prizes and trophies are donated by local businesses, family and friends and also are funded by ticket sales and a raffle.

Taking part this year were around 50 of Darren's family, friends and work colleagues and their children.
