FISHING WITH THE 'NET; MANY WEB SITES OFFER HAVENS FOR ANGLERS.

Byline: Michael Grossman Special to the Daily News

The latest net in fishing tackle is not some special weave composed of space-age material. It is the Internet - a place filled with informational opportunities for the fisherman beyond what might have been imagined but a short time ago.

The vast pool of insight and data - and the instantaneous communication that defines cyberspace Coined by William Gibson in his 1984 novel "Neuromancer," it is a futuristic computer network that people use by plugging their minds into it! The term now refers to the Internet or to the online or digital world in general. See Internet and virtual reality. Contrast with meatspace.  - is stunning, all of which - in a pleasant irony - can easily hook the angler.

In a typical evening, one can gather weather reports from San Pedro to Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  (via a computer at Penn State University), test knot-tying proficiency, and check out big-game fishing Big-game fishing, sometimes called offshore sport fishing or offshore game fishing, is a form of recreational fishing, targeting large bony fish such as tuna and marlin in the open sea, often some distance from land and, in some fishing grounds, out of sight of land.  destinations from Baja California Baja California, state, Mexico

Synopsis
.

Representatives of the fishing industry have been lured by the benefits of the Internet as well.

``It's a great way to exchange information with people all over,'' said Robert Falcone at Fisherman's Landing Tackle Shop in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. , which has its own site on the World Wide Web, which managers credit for improved business. ``We get inquiries about equipment and fishing conditions and fishing methods from all over the world now.''

Be sure to see Scripps' ``Tide Predictor,'' which offers a printable page with a color graph of the tides for a 24-hour period at select California locations. If you want to see the tide for specific dates or locations anywhere on the West or East coast, you can do so at: http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/sitesel.html

Actual conditions direct from weather-reporting buoys along the coast can be found at: http://www.nws.fsu.edu/buoy/sw.html
