Fishermen who flock to the Sierra for the opening of trout season are used to dealing with adversity. Freezing temperatures and howling winds are a frequent obstacle for anglers. However, this year the weather was picture perfect.

The Department of Fish and Game stepped up their trout plants this year to dump more than 41,000 pounds of fish into the lakes of Inyo and Mono counties. There were also 250Alpers trout that were tagged by Berkley.

The Alpers were divided up and stocked into seven different lakes. Each tag had a number stamped on it, and in a random drawing Friday night in Bishop a number was selected. The trout with that number had a $10,000 bounty placed on his head, and subsequently was named "Jake."

The only catch was, you had to land Jake on opening day to receive the 10 grand.

With temperatures in the mid-70s across the Sierra, and gas prices just 10 cents shy of $4 per gallon, anglers had to deal with a different kind of adversity.

Travel to, and throughout the Sierra, was an expensive proposition. And while mild temperatures made it pleasant for fishermen and their families, trout prefer to feed in cool water.

The most successful bait casters were well on their way to their limits shortly after the 5a.m. start before the sun had a chance to warm up the crystal-clear waters. Fishing later in the morning slowed, however several limits were still obtained by boaters who fished the deeper waters.

June Lake June Lake is a subalpine lake in Mono County, California, located at  at an elevation of 7,612 ft (2320 m). The lake is popular for fishing.  produced one of the largest fish on opening day when an 8-pound rainbow was reeled in.

Convict Lake Convict Lake (elevation 7,850 feet (2393 m)), is a lake in the Sherwin Range of the Sierra Nevada in California, USA. It is known for its fishing and the dramatic mountains (including Mount Morrison) that surround the lake. , typically the spot for big fish, did not disappoint. The largest catch at Convict weighed in at 7 pounds, 4ounces. More than a dozen Convict trout weighed in at the 5-pound mark, while many anglers reported limits of fish in the 2- to 3-pound range.

Nine-year-old Dakota Rodriguez of Granada Hills stood out as one of the great trophy hunters at Crowley Lake Crowley Lake is a reservoir on the upper Owens River in southern Mono County, California in the United States. It was created in 1941 by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP) as storage for the Los Angeles Aqueduct and for flood control.  when he reeled in a 4-pound rainbow trout rainbow trout

Jim Salter of Glendale was one of the lucky few that found a recipe for success trolling the waters of Crowley.

"We were just killing them with needlefish needlefish, common name for members of the family Belonidae, which comprises 50 species of elongated, surface-swimming predaceous fish abundant in warm seas. ," said Salter as he walked to the bait shop to weigh in a 5-gallon bucket filled with fish.
