FISHER PACKING STRIKE DEADLINE SET FOR 12:01 A.M. MAY 8

FISHER PACKING STRIKE DEADLINE SET FOR 12:01 A.M. MAY 8
LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The union representing 600 workers at Fisher Packing today gave the company a 72-hour notice that it intends to strike the French-owned meatpacking plant at 12:01 a.m. Thursday in a dispute over company demands for concessions.
"Fisher Packing is being totally unrealistic at the bargaining table," said Larry Kolman, United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) regional director. "By refusing to negotiate in good faith and by insisting on 24 takeaways, the company has not been bargaining in good faith."
The UFCW has filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board over the company's bargaining tactics. The NLRB is investigating the charges. If the government issues a complaint and it is upheld, the strike could become an unfair labor practice strike, which would protect the workers from any threat of being "permanently replaced."
"Negotiating with Fisher Packing is like trying to talk with someone who only speaks French and no translator is present," Kolman said. "The wages are below what the workers earned in 1982, yet the company still doesn't want the employees to receive a wage increase for three years."
Kolman said Fisher Packing's demands include takeaways in insurance, holidays and vacations, and "would gut the seniority system, which is the only real protection any worker has from arbitrary company policies." He added that the company is also demanding the unlimited right to subcontract work "that has been done by these workers for decades."
Kolman, a vice president of the UFCW, is overseeing Local 227's operations pending a May 5 hearing on a request by the local union's executive board for a trusteeship.
