FIRST-GRADER WINS ECOLOGY ART CONTEST.

Byline: Alicia Doyle Daily News Staff Writer

Seven-year-old Jessie Verroca never expected to take first place in a coloring contest that nearly 1,000 students entered.

But Jessie admitted she was proud to accept the honor for coloring a cartoon bear named Sierra, who encourages children to conserve water.

``I'm happy,'' said Jessie, who was honored Sunday at the Westlake Yacht Club's third annual Ecology Day Regatta regatta: see rowing; sailing.

. ``It's fun to win.''

The Ecology Day Regatta was held in conjunction with Water Awareness Month and featured a sailboat regatta, an electric boat race and songs from Los Cerritos Middle School students.

Jessie was among hundreds of first-graders in the Las Virgenes Unified School District Las Virgenes Unified School District (LVUSD) is a K-12 school district in north-west Los Angeles County, USA consisting of 14 public schools in the cities of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Westlake Village, and several small portions of the West Hills section of Los Angeles.  who participated in the Sierra the Bear coloring contest earlier this spring.

Jessie and other students were given white, stuffed bears and water conservation tips that could last a lifetime.

``Water is precious,'' said Virginia Drasnin, a member of the Westlake Woman's Club, who created Sierra, the water conservation bear.

``When children learn to love the bear, they also learn how important it is to conserve water,'' she said.

Drasnin, a retired architect, introduced Sierra the Bear to the district's eight elementary schools elementary school: see school.  in 1993. The bear - named after the Sierra Nevada Sierra Nevada, mountain range, Spain

Children who compete in the coloring contest must first learn that all living things Living Things may refer to:

Charlotte Meyer, vice president of the Las Virgenes Unified School District's school board, said the program is an effective tool to teach children about water conservation. She also believes children are never too young to become environmentally conscious.

``They need to learn about the environment early on, so they'll have one to enjoy in the future,'' Meyer said.
