Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

About 16 percent of the crowd that came for the Cal State Northridge men's basketball game Thursday stayed for the women's game.

Too bad, because they missed seeing the home team win.

The Matadors shook off an 18-game losing streak dating back to February and beat Idaho 76-63 in a Big West Conference game in front of 232.

So now CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (1-11, 1-1) knows what it takes to win a game: A team atits level. The Matadors have spent the season facing not just No. 1 Connecticut Connecticut, state, United States

In Idaho (6-9, 0-4), the Matadors found out the truth in the words.

The Matadors started slowly, failing to score for the game's 5 minutes, 36 seconds. But the Vandals had scored just four points in that samespan before CSUN ran off 15 consecutive points in 2:36, including nine points in 56 seconds. Northridge took a 5-4 lead when Myesha Saleem madetwo free throws with 14:00 left in the first half, ending a four-game, 91:30 span in which they didn't lead in a game. They led 38-26 at the half.

The team's 3-point field-goal shooting, which has been at 31 percent all season, improved with 9 of 18. Denise Cardenas, who twice has attempted 16 3-pointers in a game (and didn't come close to making half), found her groove and made 5 of 10, finishing with 17 points.  made two and finished with 20 points.

Also, Saleem had her best game of the season, scoring all nine of her points in the first half. She has been plagued by chronic foot problems that podiatrists can't pinpoint, but she was as animated as she has been all season.

Idaho played with just eight players. Its two post players, senior Julie Wynstra and freshman Keisha Moore Moore, city (1990 pop. 40,761), Cleveland co., central Okla., a suburb of Oklahoma City; inc. 1887.
