FIRST UNION NATIONAL BANK'S VIRGINIA BOARD ELECTS TWO NEW MEMBERS

 ROANOKE, Va., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- First Union National Bank of Virginia's Board of Directors today elected two additional members to serve on the board -- Donald G. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Roanoke Electric Steel Corp. in Roanoke, and James T. Holland, president of O'Sullivan Corp. in Winchester.
 Smith, who also serves as president and treasurer of his company, is a member of the boards of Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Hollins College, Center in the Square, the YMCA, the Salvation Army and Roanoke Valley Industries. He attended National Business College in Roanoke.
 Holland serves as chairman of the Virginia Business Council and vice chairman of the Virginia Foundation for Research and Economic Education. He also serves on the boards of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges and Winchester Regional Health Systems, Inc. He attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and American University in Washington, D.C.

 Ben Jenkins, president and chief operating officer of First Union Corp. of Virginia, said the board will provide "substantial policy input" during the next several months as First Union fully integrates two recent acquisitions into its system -- Dominion Bankshares, acquired in March, and First American Metro Corp., scheduled for acquisition on June 23.
 Following its acquisition of First American, First Union will operate 299 branches in Virginia, with total deposits of $7.9 billion.
 Signs at Dominion branches will be replaced with First Union signs in October. Sign changes at First American branches will occur in December.
