FIRST TRAVELCORP TO PURCHASE WINSTON-SALEM TRAVEL AGENCY
RALEIGH, N.C., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- In its fourth acquisition, Raleigh based travel services company First Travelcorp Inc. has announced plans to purchase Anderson Travel, one of Winston-Salem's oldest and largest travel agencies. With headquarters in Sherwood Plaza Shopping Center, Anderson Travel also operates a Greensboro branch office at Air Park East.
"First Travelcorp continues to search out the dominant agencies in their markets," said Fred L. Coward III, executive vice president for sales and marketing. "Anderson Travel's competitive position in the Triad and its strategic locations initially attracted our interest. We are pleased to be affiliated with Anderson, another agency with a long standing reputation of excellent travel services." The agency will retain its local name identification, Coward said.
Founded by the late Dick Anderson in 1952, Anderson Travel was purchased in 1981 by L. Thomas Conlin of Ann Arbor, Mich. Christopher U. Conlin, president and CEO of Anderson travel, said, "In looking at different possible purchasers, there was no question that First Travelcorp offered the best opportunities for this agency's continued growth. We were impressed that many of First Travelcorp's investors are from the Winston-Salem area, and are familiar with our operation.
"It was very clear that First Travelcorp has growth in mind for the company," Conlin said. "The owners of First Travelcorp are true professionals with a clear vision of the future of the travel business."
Jim Booker, who was vice president of Anderson Travel, will be named vice president of First Travelcorp's Triad Division, according to Division President Ken Taylor.
"Anderson Travel always has been a service oriented company," Booker said. "This priority will continue as First Travelcorp helps us provide even better client service, especially in the areas of new technology, buying power and industry expertise."
First Travelcorp, formed in June 1991, has acquired Lucas Travel in Greensboro, McDonald Travel in Durham and Patterson Travel in Raleigh. The Anderson Travel acquisition will bring the company's total annual sales to over $50 million. The company plans additional acquisitions, Coward said.
"First Travelcorp's growth will continue to focus on full service travel agencies in the southeastern United States with qualified, dedicated staff and state-of-the-art technology," Coward said. "Our plans to acquire additional travel agencies will allow for economies of scale and will provide enhanced services and benefits to the agencies' existing and potential customers."
