Byline: Kevin F. Sherry Daily News Staff Writer

After just a few days in operation in Ventura County, the LoJack homing device Noun 1. homing device - the mechanism in a guided missile that guides it toward its objective

led police to its first stolen car.

About 8:15 a.m. Sunday, Michelle Mahoney of Ventura stopped at a gas station at 2314 E. Thompson Blvd. to buy some gas, police said. Mahoney left her keys in her Geo Metro The Geo Metro first appeared in Chevrolet-Geo showrooms in 1989. It was a rebadged version of the Suzuki Cultus, sharing many of the drivetrain and interior components. The Metro was a direct replacement for the Chevrolet Sprint, a subcompact hatchback that was several inches  and someone drove away with it, police said.

The Geo was equipped with the LoJack system, which emits a homing beacon A homing beacon is a device that allows the user to track a ship, an animal, or another individual. Depending on the beacon, the range can be as short as a hundred meters, or, in science fiction, allow for tracking a ship through hyperspace.  that allows law-enforcement officers to track the car.

Eight minutes after police called LoJack to inform them of the theft, the Geo's signal was picked up by a Ventura County sheriff's deputy in the area of Telegraph Road Telegraph Road may refer to:

Police arrested Edgar Santiago, 18, of Ventura on suspicion of auto theft.

LoJack debuted in Ventura County in April. It was the last Southern California county to go online with the system.
