FIRST OIL AND GAS PRODUCTION STARTS FROM PIPER B PLATFORM IN NORTH SEA

HOUSTON, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Texas Petroleum Holdings, Inc. today said that first oil and gas production successfully started Wednesday, Feb. 3, from the Piper field in the U.K. sector of the North Sea. A subsidiary, Union Texas Petroleum Limited, has a 20 percent interest in the Piper field. Production commenced from the first of eight pre-drilled wells to be hooked-up to the Piper B platform. A total of 16 wells are planned to complete development of the field, located about 120 miles northeast of Aberdeen on Block 15/17 in the North Sea. Work began on Piper B in June 1989.
The Piper B platform is a major part of an investment program by a consortium of Elf Enterprise Caledonia Ltd (36.5 percent), Texaco Britain Ltd. (23.5 percent), LASMO North Sea PLC (20 percent) and Union Texas Petroleum Limited (20 percent) to develop three fields - Piper, Saltire and Chanter. Elf Enterprise Caledonia Ltd., a subsidiary of Elf Aquitaine (66.7 percent) and Enterprise Oil plc (33.3 percent), is the operator.
Saltire and Chanter are due to begin production in the spring of this year. Oil produced from the three fields will be sent by pipeline to the Flotta Terminal. Dry gas will enter the British national grid via the pipeline to the St. Fergus terminal in northeast Scotland. Piper B is regarded as the first of a new generation of North Sea platforms with the latest safety features.
One of the largest independent producers located in the U.S., Houston-based Union Texas Petroleum Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UTH) explores for and produces oil and gas overseas primarily in the U.K. North Sea, Indonesia and other strategic international areas. The company also has petrochemicals interests in the U.S.
