FIRST OF AMERICA BANK REALIZES $50 MILLION IN OPERATING EFFICIENCIES, IMPROVED CUSTOMER SERVICE AS AFFILIATES NOW PROCESS ON COMMON SOFTWARE

KALAMAZOO, Mich., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- First of America Bank Corporation (NYSE: FOA) has recently completed a six-year program to convert all 559 branch locations to common processing software creating $50 million in operating efficiencies and improved customer service capabilities. With the completion of this program, First of America joins an elite group of bank holding companies nationally that have been able to accomplish a unified software processing system, while at the same time maintaining an aggressive merger and acquisition program.
With the final system conversion of the Champion Federal acquisition in Illinois this month, the corporation has successfully consolidated the operations of nearly 100 banks and savings and loans since 1971. First of America now serves nearly 2 million individual households and over 150,000 businesses in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois.
"This streamlining of processing systems has created tremendous operating efficiencies for the corporation," said Richard F. Chormann, president and chief operating officer of First of America Bank Corporation. "With this final conversion we have been able to realize $50 million in overhead expense reduction. In addition, we now have the ability to more efficiently deliver a broad array of products and services to our customers throughout our three-state market area."
Through the common software system, the company will now be able to more quickly bring new products and services to its entire customer base. As an example, Champion Federal offices are now able to provide their customers with the many new services that First of America has introduced in recent years, including the Rising Rate CD, the FirstRate Fund, Cash Management Checking and Privilege First. The company will also be able to facilitate statewide banking for its customers in Michigan and Illinois.
First of America Bank Corporation, headquartered in Kalamazoo, is one of the largest bank holding companies in the Midwest with assets over $20 billion. First of America has 559 offices in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois that serve over 300 communities. The banks engage in commercial banking, retail banking and mortgage banking, and provide trust and other financial services. Based on net income, profitability and size of franchise, First of America is ranked among the top 35 banking companies in the United States.
