FIRST FIBER OPTIC TOKEN RING CONVERTER BASED ON IEEE 802.5J DRAFT
STANDARDS TO BE INTRODUCED BY DU PONT AT COMNET 92
WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Du Pont Electronics, Electro-Optic Products, headquartered in Research Triangle Park, N.C., will introduce their new Token Ring Converter at COMNET 92. The Token Ring Converter is the first fiber optic ring device designed to meet the requirements of the IEEE 802.5J draft specifications. It can be used as a fiber optic Token Ring Repeater or as a Token Ring Transceiver.
Du Pont has designed its new Token Ring Converter (TRC-020) to connect directly to adapter cards and bridges, as well as to the ring in, ring out, or lobe ports of Token Ring Multi-Station Access Units (MSAU). The TRC-020 can also be used in fully redundant Token Ring configurations to protect networks from downtime due to cable breaks or device failures.
The TRC-020 is also fully compatible with other Du Pont fiber-optic Token Ring products. The TRC's retiming capabilities can be added to Du Pont's LAN ONE system simply by activating the TRC's retiming circuit and deactivating the IEEE 802.5J protocol switch. When retiming is not required to reduce jitter in a system, users may turn off the TRC's retiming function and therefore reduce the impact on the network's overall station count.
The TRC is 5.1W x 5.25L x 1.5H inches and may stand alone or be installed in a 19-inch reck with a bracket sold separately. The TRC can be used without being modified in most electrical environments because of its internal, self-adjusting, wide-range input power supply. It can also be connected to all types of multi-mode fiber optic cable through either SMA or ST-type
receptacles. Du Pont's TRC-020 is priced at $1,195 and will be available in April 1992.
The Electro-Optic Products Group has been manufacturing and marketing multimedia LAN systems for commercial, academic and industrial installations since 1987. Du Pont offers the PARAGON(A) Intelligent Networking System, a standards-based system with sophisticated management software designed to address the diverse networking needs of large premises installations. This system complements the LAN ONE product family of cost-effective, multi-media solutions for medium premises and departmental applications.
