Two F-22 prototypes were tested at Edwards from 1990 through 1992; one of them was heavily damaged in a crash landing. The latest aircraft is one of nine ``engineering and manufacturing development'' versions that will be used for testing. The first F-22 flight was supposed to have occurred in late May. However, a series of glitches repeatedly postponed it. Those included a problem with electric connectors in the fuel tank, locking brakes, flight software problems, an engine problem and a fuel leak. Known as the Raptor, the F-22 is powered by two United Technologies Corp. engines, each of which produces about 35,000 pounds of thrust. Those engines allow the plane to travel at twice the speed of sound. Each F-22 will carry eight air combat missiles inside its belly, rather than hanging from its wings as is now common. It also will be armed with a 20 millimeter cannon. |
