FIRST CUSTOMERS AWAIT IKEA INDUSTRY AND TUSTIN GRAND OPENINGS
TORRANCE, Calif., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- With the grand opening still five days away, Lisa Perez has positioned herself as the first customer in line to enter the newest IKEA store on Gale Avenue in the City of Industry, Calif. And almost simultaneously, Bill Hyland has stationed himself as the first customer in line at the new IKEA store at the Tustin Market Place in Tustin, Calif.
For their efforts, Perez and Hyland will each receive all of the merchandise pictured in the room setting on the cover of the IKEA 1992 catalog, valued at approximately $3,000. Perez, who lives in Alhambra, first heard about the contest on the radio. "I'm getting married next year and want to put the furniture in storage," she said. Perez will begin a kindergarten teaching job in June and is keeping busy in line by reading books and watching her favorite soap opera on a portable TV.
Hyland, a longtime Orange County resident, first read about the contest a few days ago. An electrician by trade, Hyland is currently between jobs and said, "I want to surprise my brother and his new bride by giving them a surprise gift of furniture when they get back from their honeymoon in a few weeks."
The dual IKEA grand openings are slated to begin Wednesday, May 20, at 9 a.m. In addition to the grand prizes claimed by Perez and Hyland, IKEA is offering a "Tulka" IKEA Custom Sofa to the second person arriving at each store, as well as a "Poem" easy chair and footstool to the third lucky customers. Each day, the first 100 customers of the six-day grand opening celebration, will also receive a free gift.
At the conclusion of the grand opening celebration, IKEA will be holding a drawing for a grand prize of 1992 Volvo 240 station wagon. Second prize will be a trip for 2 to Sweden, provided by Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS) and the Swedish Tourist Board, plus $1,000 spending money from IKEA. Third prize is a "Halland" buffalo leather sofa.
City of Industry and Tustin are the 104th and 105th stores for IKEA worldwide, and the company's 9th and 10th in the United States. IKEA's first West Coast location, in Burbank, opened in November of 1990, and attracted over 2 million visitors in its first year of operation. This is the first time that IKEA has ever opened two stores on the same day.
