FIRST BABY MAKES SPEEDY DEBUT EARLY GIRL BORN AT HOME.

Byline: Carol Rock Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Firefighter Specialist Mel Howard and his wife, Cerene, a lawyer who specializes in medical-malpractice defense, thought they would have a quiet New Year - that is, until their daughter made her quick and unexpected entrance in their Valencia living room.

``It started about 9 o'clock. My wife was having mild contractions and said she wanted to take a nap,'' the tired new father explained. ``But the contractions persisted and got pretty good. After I called the hospital, I went to look and see how she was doing and saw the baby was crowning. In about three minutes "Three Minutes" is the 46th episode of Lost. It is the twenty-second episode of the second season. The episode was directed by Stephen Williams, and written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. It first aired on May 17, 2006 on ABC.  I noticed more of her head was coming out, so I delivered her myself.''

The new Miss Howard, who entered the world at 3:19 a.m., was the first baby born in Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  in 2004.

Local paramedics were on the way when the baby decided she didn't want to wait.

The newborn girl has no name yet. It's one of those things that Mel and Cerene thought they had a little time to decide.

The little girl, with loads of black curly locks under a tiny pink knit cap, slept soundly Thursday next Thursday Next is the main protagonist in a series of comic fantasy novels by the British author Jasper Fforde. She was first introduced in Fforde's first published novel, The Eyre Affair, released on July 19 2001 by Hodder & Stoughton.  to her mother's bed at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital; a thick book of baby names was tucked under the bassinet's plastic shell.

Cerene Howard's original due date was Jan. 9, but a ``just in case'' feeling made Mel Howard bring an obstetrics obstetrics (ŏbstĕ`trĭks), branch of medicine concerned with the treatment of women during pregnancy, labor, childbirth (see birth), and the time after childbirth.  kit home from his fire rig Wednesday afternoon. She said her husband barely had time to put on one glove and grab a bulb syringe syringe /sy·ringe/ (si-rinj´) (sir´inj) an instrument for injecting liquids into or withdrawing them from any vessel or cavity.  before the baby made her entrance into the world.

She said one of the best things happened later Thursday morning, when the couple's 2-year-old son, Davis, came to the hospital and met his baby sister.

``He slept through the whole thing at home,'' she said. ``When he saw her, he smiled and gave her a kiss. Of course he wanted to hold her.''

Mel Howard said he's curious to see how his son reacts once the baby comes home.

``So far it doesn't seem to be a big deal. We'll have to see what happens when she comes into the territory he's claimed for the last two years,'' he said, laughing.

The first baby born at Newhall Memorial in 2004 was Ellie Marie Verbanac, who was born at 7:40 a.m. Thursday. She slept in her uncle's arms as friends and family crowded around first-time mother Christina, marveling at the baby and promising to help take care of her.

``We've all volunteered to baby-sit,'' said Christina's aunt Andrea Musgrove. ``Family is always free.''
