FIRST 4 GRADUATES OF PAINEWEBBER SCHOLARS PROGRAM HONORED FOR ACADEMIC
ACHIEVEMENT: 2-YEAR PROGRAM TEAMS STUDENTS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE
NEW YORK, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The first four graduates of the PaineWebber Scholars Program graduated at a ceremony held yesterday at PaineWebber's headquarters. The program, which was instituted two years ago in conjunction with Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO), teams high school students with PaineWebber employee volunteers who act as personal and professional mentors to young scholars. In attendance at the ceremony were the students and their families and teachers, the mentors, and representatives from SEO and PaineWebber, including Donald B. Marron, chairman and chief executive officer of PaineWebber Group Inc.
The PaineWebber Scholars Program entails one-on-one interaction between student and mentor. The program gives the students work experience and the mentors offer career guidance and help with college applications. While the career aspects of the program are important, the interpersonal bonds formed between mentor and student are just as important.
The first four graduates of the program are: Ian Lord, whose mentor is Burt Esrig, managing director; Jada Thompson, whose mentor is Ellen Harris, managing director; Patricia Tobar, whose mentor is Delores Arton, vice president and; Daryl Williams, whose mentor is Andrew Garvey, vice president. Each of the graduating students will receive a $1,250 scholarship to be used toward their college education.
Donald B. Marron presented the students with certificates of academic achievement, saying, "The Scholars Program is part of PaineWebber's ongoing dedication to educational excellence and our commitment to the community through employee participation. We are very proud of these young people who have worked so hard over the past two years to realize their academic potential. We are equally proud of their mentors, who, through their commitment, have made a real difference in these kids' lives. In turn, the students have enriched the lives of their mentors."
Sponsors for Educational Opportunity was founded in 1963 to help underachieving students attain academic success and personal fulfillment by matching them with caring role models. Nearly 100 percent of SEO students go on to attend college. Over 3,800 students have received college educations through SEO and mentorship programs such as PaineWebber's.
PaineWebber and SEO joined together in 1990 to create the PaineWebber Scholars Program, which, in addition to the 1992 graduates, has students in the classes of '93 and '94. The mentors are trained by SEO along with PaineWebber's Human Resources department to provide leadership and guidance in both academic pursuits and on-the-job training. The Human Resources Staff also monitors the students' and mentors' progress. In addition, the students receive three hours a week of tutoring in English, Math, Science and other high school subjects from SEO.
PaineWebber is one of the nation's leading full-service securities firms, with more than 250 offices and 13,150 employees worldwide.
