YOU COMPLETE ME

Valencia senior Michael Herrick, currently seventh on the state's all-time passing-yardage list (8,812 yards), could become the fifth quarterback from California and 32nd nationally to surpass 9,000 yards Friday night when the Vikings play at Burroughs of Burbank.

Herrick also is in position to break Chad Davis' state record for most career completions.

ROUGH REWIND

Things have gone well for Westlake's football team off the field, with defensive end/tight end Jeff Miller

For other people named Jeff Miller, see Jeff Miller (disambiguation).

Jefferson B. "Jeff" Miller (born June 27, 1959), American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 2001, representing
verbally committing to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
and running back Jeff Rapoport making a commitment to play baseball at UCLA.

There hasn't been much for the Warriors, who are 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Marmonte League, to celebrate on the field. Coach Jim Benkert has had to shuffle his lineup to compensate for injuries to Miller (broken foot), Rapoport (ankle) and defensive back Marlon Bills (hamstring).

Westlake appeared in position to get back into the Marmonte race last week, leading unbeaten Simi Valley 23-7 in the second half. The Pioneers scored 22 unanswered points for a 29-23 victory.

It was Simi Valley's first victory over Westlake since 1991. The week before, Royal of Simi Valley beat the Warriors 24-21, its first win against Westlake since 1991.

WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT

Newbury Park and Simi Valley haven't been contenders in the Marmonte League the past five years. Only Calabasas has a worse winning percentage in league games since the Marmonte expanded to eight teams in 2002.

When the league schedule was put together this season, many coaches thought Friday's game between Thousand Oaks and Westlake would be the game of the year.

Right date, wrong game. Simi Valley (5-0 overall, 2-0 Marmonte) plays Friday night at Newbury Park (4-1, 2-0) in a matchup of two of the area's most improved programs.

Simi Valley, led by senior running back Devin Kelley, is off to its first 5-0 start, with victories over perennial powers Canyon of Canyon Country and Westlake. Newbury Park has won four in a row since a season-opening loss to Verbum Dei of Los Angeles, showcasing a passing attack reminiscent of the Keith Smith- and Chris Czernek-led offenses of the early '90s.

Newbury Park hasn't won more than three league games in any of the past five seasons, compiling an 11-22 record against Marmonte competition during that span. The Pioneers are 6-27 during the stretch, with one winning record: 4-3 in 2003.

SECOND FIDDLE JUST FINE

Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks extended the state's second-longest active winning streak to 27 Friday with a 35-28 victory over Valencia. It was the fifth time during the streak that the Knights' margin of victory was seven or fewer points.

The top streak in California belongs to Central Catholic of Modesto, which won its 54th consecutive game, 87-0 over Gustine.

in this week's Cal-Hi Sports state rankings, Notre Dame has climbed to No. 2. The Knights, who began the season as the state's third-ranked team, benefited from second-ranked Clovis West's 42-21 loss to Centennial of Corona and moved one slot behind Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo is second in Student Sports' National Fab 50, behind Carroll of Southlake, Texas.

Notre Dame, which moved up to 19th (from 22nd) in the National Fab 50, nearly was No. 1 in the state. Mission Viejo trailed No. 7 De La Salle De La Salle is the name of several educational institutions affiliated with the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the Lasallian Brothers, a Roman Catholic religious teaching order founded by French priest Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle:
of Concord by seven points in the third quarter last weekend, then rallied for a 36-26 victory.

The Knights had to pull off a comeback of their own against Valencia, overcoming a seven-point halftime deficit for their 14th consecutive home victory.

``I was hoping we would be in it long enough to have a chance to win it at the end, and, fortunately, we did,'' said Notre Dame coach Kevin Rooney, whose team has scored at least 35 points 16 times during its streak. ``We hurt ourselves with some penalties early, but we found a way to hang in there and come out on top against a very good team.''

MAKING A STATEMENT

Taft of Woodland Hills and Dorsey of Los Angeles have been City Section title favorites even before the season started. Because they don't meet during the regular season, the race for the top seed in the City playoffs will largely be based on their performances against common opponents.

Taft (5-0) appears to be in front following a 38-6 victory last week over Narbonne of Harbor City. Dorsey (4-1) defeated Narbonne 15-7 in its opener.

The Dons applied some pressure on Taft with a 46-21 triumph over defending City champion Birmingham of Lake Balboa, the Toreadors' West Valley League rival.

Next week's games: Taft vs. Birmingham and Dorsey vs. Coliseum League rival Crenshaw. The Toreadors opened the season with a 35-34 victory over Crenshaw.

Taft is ranked 19th and Dorsey 20th in this week's Cal-Hi Sports state poll.
