FIRM HOPES TO MAKE SWEET MUSIC WITH IPO PROCEEDS.

ArtistDirect Inc., an online music company that connects artists directly with their fans worldwide, hopes to connect with investors as well.

The Encino-based company registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering. The company did not disclose the number of shares it will offer or a filing range in its paperwork, which was filed late Wednesday, but hopes to raise $86.3 million from the sale.

Proceeds from the offering will be used for advertising and promotion, content production and Web site development and general corporate purposes, the company said in its filing.

ArtistDirect, founded in 1996, is designed to provide multimedia music entertainment, news and information, create music communities to facilitate interaction between artists and fans, and provide exclusive music and merchandise direct from artists themselves.

The ArtistDirect Network consists of ArtistDirect.com, home of the online channels that the company operates and maintains on behalf of artists; UBL (Universal Business Language) A format for exchanging data from one XML business language to another. Based on ebXML Core Components, UBL is designed to provide a common language that acts as an intermediate vocabulary so that one XML vocabulary can interoperate with .com, a music search engine; iMusic, an online community site where fans exchange music interests and commentary; and the ArtistDirect Superstore, a retail site offering a wide selection of recorded music recorded music nmúsica grabada  and artist merchandise.

Additionally, ArtistDirect operates the ArtistDirect Talent Agency and manages Kneeling Elephant Records.
