FIREFIGHTERS ON ALERT BECAUSE OF HEAT, WIND.Byline: Jason Kandel Staff Writer Summer-like temperatures and high winds hit Southern California on Monday, creating unusually dangerous fire conditions in some areas. Although the warm weather Monday offered a chance for a last quick dip in the pool, forecasters said temperatures in Southern California are expected to cool into the mid-60s in the days ahead as Christmas approaches. The winds gusted up to 65 mph in the mountains and led firefighters to dispatch extra engines into the San Fernando Valley. ``We're charged with the tough task of being omnipresent in this multi-diverse city,'' said L.A. Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. ``But at no time is our task made more difficult than when the seasonal wind raises its ugly head.'' The winds whipped up clouds of dust in some spots, but the South Coast Air Quality Management District reported no health threats in the area. Although there were no wind-related emergencies during the day Monday, the Los Angeles Fire Department stationed extra engines in the Porter Ranch, Sun Valley, Woodland Hills, Laurel Canyon and West Hills fire stations. Humphrey said it is important for people to keep their Christmas trees watered during this type of weather to avoid a fire hazard. ``If you feel parched during this dry period,'' Humphrey said, ``imagine how the tree feels.'' Throughout the Valley, residents sought refuge from the swelter by taking dips in pools, just days before Christmas. Van Nuys reached a high of 81 degrees Monday, while Burbank and Northridge hit 79 degrees. Highs are expected to drop into the mid-60s by Christmas Day, forecasters said, while lows are expected to drop into the low 40s. ``This mild, warm weather will give way into a cooling trend that's more typical of winter weather,'' said Clint Simpson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. ``This is a marked and pleasant change from some of the wetter winters we have had.'' |
