Fire broke out early Thursday and burned up to 150 acres of grassy, hilly terrain near Godde Hill Road on the city's west side, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County fire officials said.

The fire, its origin called suspicious by officials, forced the closure of the popular back-road commuter route and briefly threatened several homes west of Palmdale.

More than 120 firefighters battled the 12:16 a.m. blaze along Godde Hill, two miles north of Avenue N, before bringing it under control shortly before 5:30 a.m., officials said.

``They found some material that looked suspicious, some burning materials,'' said Battalion Chief Michael Balzano of the Los Angeles County Fire Department Not to be confused with Los Angeles Fire Department.

Balzano said there were a couple of homes threatened on Hacienda Ranch Road.

``There was a wind change, and it made a run toward those homes, but it didn't make it, thank God,'' Balzano said.

Fire officials warn residents to be cautious because dry grass and brush easily ignite during hot weather. They advise avoiding yard chores such as weed cleanup during the hot part of the day because power tools can spark fires.
