FIREFIGHTER INJURED IN CONDO BLAZE.

ENCINO - A fire engulfed the attic of a San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The fire began just before 6 p.m. at a 16-unit complex on the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Killion Street, sending flames soaring from its second story above the adjacent 101 Freeway, slowing rush-hour commuters.

``I saw the flames from as far away as the dog park at Victory,'' said Frani Levinson, 42, of Reseda. ``We thought it was a nuclear bomb going off.''

Three top-floor condos at the Mission Encino complex in the 5500 block of Zelzah Avenue suffered moderate damage as firefighters tore through ceilings to reach flames erupting from the roof.

Water also damaged the homes of three families.

``There was a guy crying and a woman crying,'' said Galit Strugano, 27, who lives across the street. ``It's really sad.''

Last May, a 47-year-old Encino man was killed during a natural gas explosion that left 300 residents homeless in an apartment complex on Newcastle Avenue, a block from Monday's fire. A smaller fire recently damaged an apartment across the street.
