FIREARM SAFETY PRODUCTS, INC. ANNOUNCES $40,000 WRITING CONTEST

HEFLIN, Ala., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Firearm Safety Products, Inc. (FSPI) announces sponsorship of a writing contest offering what are likely the largest cash prizes ever awarded to the shooting sports media.
FSPI's "Home Firearms Safety" Writing Contest will award two $10,000 top prizes and 20 runner-up prizes of $1,000 each, for a total of $40,000 in prize money, to the authors of the best magazine or newspaper articles on the subject of firearms safety in the home.
According to FSPI President, Richard P. Smyth, the company is sponsoring the contest as a means of implementing its commitment to educating the public to the need and means of improving firearms safety. "When Firearm Safety Products, Inc. was in the early stages of product development, we began conducting extensive market studies that showed us that, while new types of gun safety products are needed to combat firearms accidents, at least as great a need exists to educate the public to the issues and measures involved in gun safety," said Smyth. "There is proof that education works; the declining gun accident rate in recent years is a direct result of improved shooter education. But as long as one person is being killed or injured in a preventable gun accident, there is still work to be done."
"Outdoor writers have a great and positive influence on their readers," Smyth continued, "giving them the ability to deliver a message that can not only change lives, but save lives. We want to encourage writers who are knowledgeable about firearms and firearms safety to increase gun safety awareness among the general public, and to encourage publications to exhibit a responsible attitude toward firearm safety," he said.
The contest is open to articles published between Sept. 1, 1992, and Dec. 31, 1993 in any magazine or newspaper. Entry deadline is Feb. 15, 1994. Writers are invited to enter as many articles as they wish. The contest will be judged by a panel of independent judges, with winners announced in April, 1994.
Firearm Safety Products, Inc., is an Atlanta-based company whose mission is to educate the public to the need and means of firearms safety and offer products to facilitate safer gun storage and handling.
