FIRE TAKES TOLL ON CONDOS; ATTIC, ROOF DESTROYED.

Byline: Phillip W. Browne Staff Writer

Norma Sanchez was at work Monday when her daughter called to tell her that their condominium condominium

`` `Mommy, you need to come home! The house is on fire!' '' a tearful Sanchez recalled her saying, as she stood outside what remained of the six-unit condominium complex in the 5000 block of Denny Drive. ``The baby sitter took them out and got them to safety. This is just horrible.''

While Sanchez's children escaped unscathed from the six-unit building, neighbors rescued two dogs and a cat from elsewhere in the complex. The 11:50 a.m. fire destroyed the attic and second floor before more than 150 city firefighters extinguished ex·tin·guish

Michael Ziton, who lives in the complex, said he saw flames jumping about 15 feet above the roof. He dialed 911 and then ran next door to see if anyone was in danger or trapped, and then rescued a cat.

``The children were already out, so I kept knocking on doors to make sure people weren't home,'' Ziton said.

``I broke down two doors at the end of the complex to see if anyone was inside, and I pulled the cat out of one. That cat would have died. I put it in my bathroom - and it's really happy now.''

Other neighbors had already rescued two dogs.

Emergency crews were called to Denny Avenue about 11:55 a.m. and found flames ripping (1) Converting an audio CD from its native CD-DA format to MP3, AAC or some other compressed audio format. ``What made this so difficult to knock down is the fact that all six units have a shared attic,'' Ruda said. ``Firefighters had to pull hoses into each unit and punch through the roof, so it was like battling six individual structure fires.

Steve Engels, who lives in unit two, was able to rescue his $7,000 Harley Davidson from his garage after running home from work. But his computer, electronic instruments, guitars and mounds of clothes were all lost, he said.

``I was just about ready to move to the Westside, but I guess it wasn't soon enough,'' Engels said. The cause of the fire was under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
