FIRE STATION TO REPLACE AGED BUILDING.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Daily News Staff Writer

Taking shovels in hand, city and county officials celebrated Friday the start of construction on a $1.7 million fire station, the fourth to be built in Lancaster.

Officials turned soil at Elm and Kettering streets, where a 10,500-square-foot facility will replace the cramped quarters of Fire Station 33 six blocks away.

``This will enable us to double our size,'' said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Fire Chief P. Station 33 was built in 1966 as the battalion headquarters. The 5,600-square-foot brick building - which cost $122,000 to build - replaced a 2,000-square-foot station built in 1938.

Three stations have been built in Lancaster since 1994: Station 134 near 25th Street West and Avenue K-8, Station 135 at 20th Street East and Avenue K-4, and Station 129 at Avenue M and 6th Street West.

Officials said that the latest fire station will be identical to Fire Station 129, where a garage facility, training center, training tower and a helicopter pad are located.

The new station will be capable of housing about 10 firefighters and will provide interior and exterior storage, an auxiliary generator, above-ground fuel tank, and automatic fire sprinkler system.

``This is a good investment of tax dollars,'' Freeman said. ``This station will last us 50 years easily. But we can easily exceed that.''

The new station will also house a firefighter Explorer program
