More than 300 firefighters battled the 40-acre fire with help from air crews. Fanned by 15 mph winds, the fire split in two, said Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Mike Brown.

Flames broke out about 1 p.m. near the freeway and Placerita Canyon Road and was nearly out by about 2:30. Then a small spot fire ignited nearby, soon burning out of control toward houses lining the freeway.

One county firefighter was treated for a minor knee injury and one inmate crew member was overcome by heat, Brown said.

At least four fires have raged through the bone-dry brush surrounding Santa Clarita in recent months. Firefighters had predicted a bad fire years after two drought years.
