FINDING RICHES IN THE VAULT SECOND-YEAR COACH LIFTS THOUSAND OAKS TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH EMPHASIS ON EVENT.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Makisi Haleck has been on the rise in the pole vault pole vault

Track-and-field event consisting of a vault for height over a crossbar with the aid of a long pole. It became a competitive sport in the mid-19th century and was included in the first modern Olympic Games.
this season and so has the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  High vaulting vaulting

Haleck has raised his personal best by two feet to 15-feet this season and eclipsed the 21-year-old Thousand Oaks High record of 14-4 1/2. Teammates Jason Park and Ed Aldana have the second- and third-best marks in Ventura County, going 14-0 and 12-6, respectively.

Thousand Oaks also has a talented corps of girls' vaulters that includes junior Emily Yudovin, the defending Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ``There is a lot of competition between each of us,'' Haleck said. ``It's paying off a lot. We're all having good seasons.''

The number of vaulters has tripled over the last two seasons, but Haleck and Yudovin, both juniors and third-year vaulters, said the biggest difference has been the influx of athletes whose main event in the pole vault rather than being multievent performers. Team camaraderie also has been a factor.

``We had a good program, but it has kind of tightened,'' Yudovin said. ``There is a lot more team spirit. We're a lot closer and help each other more. We're all closer as friends and it is a lot easier than vaulting by yourself.''

For second-year coach Robert Radnoti, the emphasis on the pole vault is the first step in transforming Thousand Oaks -traditionally known for its distance runners - into a Southern Section team-title contender.

``We're trying to identify segments and devote energy into areas where we can score points and be competitive in CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). ,'' Radnoti said.

Radnoti trumpeted the pole vault during visits to junior high schools and at parent nights as well as to his daughter Kristina, who had been unable to compete in the distances this season because of exercise-induced asthma exercise-induced asthma,

.

Radnoti made a believer of Hobbs, who had competed in track since age 6 but had not tried the pole vault until this season.

``It really sounded neat,'' Hobbs said. ``Sometimes you have to wait a long time with 15 kids waiting to jump, but we have a lot of fun.''

, Thousand Oaks purchased the pits of former Marmonte League schools Channel Islands and Camarillo, which dropped the event when they moved to the Pacific View League.

increased their inventory of poles to more than 30 to accommodate all vaulting levels. The school also has a staff of four coaches headed by veteran Jim Gredin, who has coached Thousand Oaks vaulters (including his three sons) for 16 years.

Radnoti has bolstered the staff with the addition of Camarillo coach John Stringer string·er

``Robert is an unbelievable person and full of energy,'' Gredin said. ``He has asked me two years ago, `What's it going to take to win CIF? What kind of athlete?' He went out there and beat the bushes. It is definitely the best crop we've ever had.''

The change is also evident to Quady, who vaulted 13-feet at Thousand Oaks in 1972 and recalls his high school experience with few poles and football coaches. Quady said he was ``jazzed'' to see Thousand Oaks produce its first 15-foot vault on Saturday.
