All across America, fathers are kissing their babies good night and sticking a set of plastic toy golf clubs in their cribs.

Kids are getting off their skateboards. They're digging through their closets for a shirt with a collar on it and heading for the local three-par course like Tiger did.

And the rest of us are looking up at the heavens and smiling. It has been awhile, but the nation's kids finally have a sports role model who doesn't come with a chip on his shoulder and a rap sheet.

The kid seems too good to be true. No apparent attitude problem. No pending rape charges. No foul-mouth outbursts.

Tiger's got a million-dollar smile and actually seems to respect his elders on the Professional Golfers Association Professional Golfers' Association, (with or without the apostrophe), is the usual term for a professional association in men's golf. It is often abbreviated to PGA. There are several PGAs around the world, including:

Then, there's the relationship with his father. If you saw the kid hugging his father after winning the Masters on Sunday, the love in that tearful, tight hug jumps out at you.

That's no Nike ad. Nobody's paying him for that hug.

It's the hug every parent wants from their child at that exact moment when words would just get in the way. The hug that says without you, none of this would be possible.

Tiger's father, Earl Woods Earl Dennison Woods (March 5, 1932 – May 3, 2006) was an athlete, a US Army infantry officer, (retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel), and the father of golfer Tiger Woods. , should bottle that hug - manufacture and distribute it. He might wind up making more money than his kid.

that hug of love and respect for a long time now. Few seem to be able to find it.

Bill and Hillary should have the Woods over to the White House for dinner, put them up in the Lincoln Bedroom for the night and not ask them for a dime in return. Just for advice.

In the morning, Earl and his wife, Tida, should address the nation - let us all in on how parents in this country should go about getting hugs like that.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated after Tiger was named 1996 Sportsman of the Year Since its inception in 1954, Sports Illustrated magazine has annually presented the "Sportsman of the Year" award to "the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement." A majority of the winners have been American. , Earl gave us a little glimpse into how he got that hug. I'm sure that he could add to it today, when his son sits on top of the world.

Time was one of the main ingredients, Earl said. Tiger always had his parents' undivided attention and time.

with do's and don'ts,'' Earl said. ``I took out the authority aspect and turned it into companionship. I made myself vulnerable as a parent.''

Tida brought the boy the influence of the calm and inner-peace teaching she learned in her homeland, Thailand. Together, they gave the boy the best of two different worlds, Earl said.

Besides teaching his son golf, the ex-Green Beret lieutenant colonel in Vietnam also taught Tiger about racism and hatred in this country - taught him how a young man with Thai, African, Chinese, American Indian and European blood in him could beat racism and hatred with brains and talent.

When the Caucasian-only country clubs put up barriers in front of Earl and his son, Tiger, they just found ways around them.

``See, you don't turn it into hatred,'' Earl said, in the Sports Illustrated interview. ``You turn it into something positive. So many athletes who reach the top now had things happen to them as children that created hostility, and they bring that hostility with them.

``But that hostility uses up energy. If you can do it without the chip on the shoulder, it frees up all that energy to create.''

Earl Woods knocked the chip off his son's shoulder and freed up his energy to create. Tiger's God-given talent did the rest.

``I like the idea of being a role model,'' Tiger has said. ``It's an honor. People took the time to help me as a kid, and they impacted my life. I want to do the same for kids.''

And in homes all across this country this week, parents listen to the words and look at the hug - and they smile and nod.

Finally, a real role model for our kids - Tiger Woods.

And one for ourselves - his old man, Earl.
