FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR THE JIMI HENDRIX ELECTRIC GUITAR COMPETITION

SEATTLE, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Sixteen electric guitar players have been selected as semi-finalists in the Jimi Hendrix Guitar Competition presented by Gibson Guitar Corporation with support from Guitar Player magazine, Pandemonium and KZOK 102.5. The Competition is part of the much-anticipated Jimi Hendrix Electric Guitar Festival at Bumbershoot 1995. The Competition will honor the electric guitarist whose style of playing embodies those qualities admired in Jimi Hendrix: imagination, charisma, technical brilliance and innovation.

The winner of the Competition will also receive the coveted Voodoo Chile Award, a $5,000 Cash Prize, a Gibson Jimi Hendrix Flying V, and a chance to join the all-star line-up of players at the Jimi Hendrix Tribute Concert on Monday, September 4. Second place winner receives $1,000, third place $500, and fourth through eighth place winners receive $200.

The sixteen semi-finalists, selected from over 150 tape submissions, are: Tim Butler of Vancouver, BC; Gary Serkin of Nashville, TN; Angel Reca of Cape Coral, FL; Omar Torres of Seattle, WA; Johnnie Burk a.k.a. Taboo Jackson of Seattle, WA; Al Rowe of Enumclaw, WA; Jay Roberts of Issaquah, WA; Steve Donovan of Vancouver, BC; Corey- James Phillips of Vancouver, BC; Gary Vincent of San Luis Obispo, CA; James Grosvenor of Seattle, WA; Ritsu Katsumata of Portland, OR; Glen Lynskey of Seattle, WA; Adam Haley of Hollywood, CA; Gypsy Sue Caprino of Mount Lake, WA; and Craig Giuffre of Portland, OR.

The semi-finalists compete live on Wednesday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. at The Backstage. Tickets are $8, and are available through Ticketmaster ticket centers, by calling 206-628-0888, or at The Backstage.

The eight finalists will compete at Bumbershoot on Sunday, September 3 at the United Airlines Opera House at 3:45 p.m. Tickets to Bumbershoot are $9 in advance or $10 at the gate; admission to the Competition Finals and all programming at Bumbershoot is on a first-come, first-served basis. Judges for the competition include journalists, guitarists, Richard Head of Gibson Guitar Corporation, Hendrix historians and musicians including Billy Cox and Buddy Miles of The Band of Gypsys, Noel Redding of Experience, and Narada Michael Walden, the musical director of the Tribute Concert.
