FILMMAKER VARDA TO GIVE CALARTS LECTURE TUESDAY.

VALENCIA - California Institute of the Arts' School of Film/Video will host groundbreaking filmmaker Agnes Varda Tuesday as part of a bicoastal bi·coas·tal  
adj.
1. Relating to both the east and west coasts of the United States, as:
a. Traveling frequently between coasts as part of a business or living arrangement:
 educational program on French cinema.

Following meetings with CalArts students and a special master class for graduate students in the film directing program, Varda will screen two rarely seen films set in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. : the 1980 documentary ``Murs, Murs'' (``Murals, Murals''), and the 1981 drama, ``Documenteur.'' The screening, which also will include a question-and-answer session, will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Bijou Theater on campus, 24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia.

Known as the ``Grand Mother of the French New Wave,'' Varda began making films in the 1950s and has since compiled a unique, far-ranging body of work. Admission to the film screening is free.

--Faculty members from the vocal music program of the CalArts School of Music, joined by guest artists, will perform ``Northern Sounds: Vocal Music From the Balkan Rim,'' at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Roy O. Disney Roy Oliver Disney (June 24, 1893–December 20, 1971, aged 78) was, with his younger brother Walt Disney, co-founder of what is now The Walt Disney Company. Roy served as the company's chief executive officer (1929–1971)-though title name wasn't given until 1968-,  Music Hall on campus.

The free program will include vocal music by Estonian composer Arvo Part, Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen Aulis Sallinen (born April 9, 1935) is a Finnish contemporary classical music composer. He writes in a modern, though tonal and not experimental music style. He studied at the Sibelius Academy, where his teachers included Joonas Kokkonen.  and Latvian composer Talivaldis Kennins, as well as several Latvian folk songs. Among the singers will be faculty members Paul Berkholds, Jacqueline Bobak and Marc Lowenstein, accompanied on piano by visiting artists Marja Mutru and Peteris Plakivis.

, a member of the CalArts School of Music faculty, will perform a concert of 20th- and 21st-century compositions at 8 p.m. Friday in the Roy O. Disney Music Hall on campus.

Accompanying him in the performance will be fellow faculty members Mark Menzies on the violin and Lorna Eder on the piano. Admission is free.

Powell is a graduate of the Julliard School. He has commissioned many new works for clarinet and has premiered more than 200 compositions. He has performed at major concert venues throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia including Avery Fisher Hall Avery Fisher Hall, located in New York City, is a part of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. It is the home of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The hall contains 2,738 seats. , Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.
