TriStar has purchased rights to the case history Dr. Oliver Sacks calls ``The Last Hippie,'' intending to fast-track it to the big screen. Sacks is the prolific author whose amazing work with patients suffering from neurological and other disorders has already yielded two films: the acclaimed 1990 ``Awakenings,'' in which Sacks was portrayed by Williams; and the forthcoming ``At First Sight,'' starring Kilmer, about the upheaval in a blind man's life when surgery allows him to see for the first time.

Sacks tells us he believes ``The Last Hippie'' will be the next of his works to be made into a movie - and that there are several other film projects now ``being discussed,'' based on some of his other cases. On the small-screen side, he has ``Oliver Sacks: The Mind Traveller,'' which PBS PBS

A January start date in Japan has now been set for Steven Spielberg's next picture - the adaptation of Arthur Golden's novel, ``Memoirs of a Geisha A Geisha (祇園囃子 Gion Bayashi .'' When the project was announced in April, the director was angling for an October production start, despite the fact there was no script for the film. Now there is one, written by Ron Bass (``How Stella Got Her Groove Back,'' ``My Best Friend's Wedding'') - and casting is already under way. A complex epic covering 60 years, the Years, The

The hot list

The cast and crew of ABC's ``Cupid'' - one of the few fall series receiving much positive buzz - are in Chicago for a season of shooting. That's because of Jeremy Piven. Piven, the star/co-producer of the show, believes in reality - a lot - and he picked Chicago, ``because we needed a large-city setting, and I didn't want it to be like `NYPD Blue,' for instance, where they only shoot exteriors in New York. Chicago is rich with fresh shooting sites.''

The actor, who played the cousin on ``Ellen'' and portrayed the edgy head writer on ``The Larry Sanders Show,'' notes, ``I hate it when shows or actors fake situations. For instance, If I'm supposed to be eating in a scene, I make sure I haven't eaten in a while - and fill up when we're shooting.''

Piven, who was raised in the Chicago area, will also be getting a lot of big-screen exposure this fall. He has two features coming up - the independent ``Just Write,'' and ``Very Bad Things,'' with Cameron Diaz and Christian Slater.
