VINTAGE SLIDES: There's something about watching old home movies, even those starring total strangers, that triggers that warm, fuzzy feeling. Advertisers know it, having used them to sell everything from insurance and investment firms to holiday music collections. Charles Phoenix suspects the same goes for old slides. He has compiled a diverse collection of color not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed. See also: Color slides of the '40s, '50s and '60s from Southern California thrift shops, yard sales and flea markets for a montage he calls ``God Bless Americana.'' Some settings are familiar (Disneyland, Marineland and Santa's Village when they were new) and some are not (an unremarkable Encino home pool). Some events are historic (the only flight of the Spruce Goose) and some are not (a 1962 home New Year's party in which a woman danced with a skeleton). Phoenix will play commentator and ``tour guide'' when he presents his program at 8 tonight and Saturday at the Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd. The show also will run Dec. 7 and 8. ITALIAN IMPORTS: The American Cinematheque this weekend presents a collection of rarely seen silent shorts from the archives of Italy's Cineteca del Fruili and the Pordenone Silent Film Festival. The program begins at 7 tonight with ``Silent Clowns,'' a two-hour assortment of slapstick slapstick Comedy characterized by broad humour, absurd situations, and vigorous, often violent action. It took its name from a paddlelike device, probably introduced by 16th-century commedia dell'arte troupes, that produced a resounding whack when one comic actor used it to bits made in the 1910s, followed by a 60-minute American melodrama, ``Tiger's Coat,'' starring Tina Modotti. At 6:30 p.m. Saturday is a slate of 13 animated shorts made by brothers Max and Dave Fleischer, best-known for the Popeye the Sailor and Betty Boop cartoons. Director Richard Fleischer, Max's son, will introduce the program. Two early William Wyler films will be shown in a double feature at 8:30 p.m.: ``Straight Shooting'' and ``Thunder Riders.''
