FILM SNEAK PEEK PAN AFRICAN FEST UNDER WAY.

The ninth annual Pan African Film Festival is under way through Feb. 19 at the Magic Johnson “Earvin Johnson” redirects here. For the Milwaukee Bucks center, see Ervin Johnson.

Earvin Effay Johnson, Jr. (born August 14, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan), nicknamed Magic
 Theatres, with films by or about Africans and African-Americans.

This weekend's offerings include films from Chad, Burkina Faso Burkina Faso (burkē`nə fä`sō), republic (2005 est. pop. 13,925,000), 105,869 sq mi (274,200 sq km), W Africa. It borders on Mali in the west and north, on Niger in the northeast, on Benin in the southeast, and on Togo, Ghana, and , Martinique, Egypt and Zimbabwe, as well as the rarely seen Robert Drew documentary ``On the Road With Duke Ellington'' and Kevin Fitzgerald's hip-hop documentary, ``Freestyle.''

The Children's Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday will screen two movies for kids for free, and the Student Festival plays weekday mornings with free screenings aimed at middle and high school students.

All films play at the Magic Johnson Theatres, 3650 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Baldwin Hills. Related nonmovie events, including an art exhibit, are in the adjacent Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza (BHCP) opened in November 1947 in Los Angeles, California as the Broadway-Crenshaw Center with 550,000 square feet (51,000 m²) and 13 acres of parking. .

Admission for most films is $8 for adults, $5.25 for seniors and $5 for children under 12. General admission for screenings starting before 6 p.m. is $5.25. Information: (213) 896-8221 or www.paff.org.

 this weekend with three films based on his novels and a recent documentary on the acclaimed writer.

Dust Bowl migration drama ``The Grapes of Wrath'' plays at 7:30 tonight, followed by ``Thieves Highway,'' based on screenwriter A.I. Besserides' novel about corruption in the San Francisco wholesale produce market.

At 5:30 p.m. Saturday is a free screening of Morgan Neville's 1998 documentary, ``John Steinbeck: An American Writer.'' The double feature at 7:30 opens with James Dean's rocket to stardom, ``East of Eden East of Eden is a novel by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck, published in September 1952.

Often described as Steinbeck's most ambitious novel, East of Eden
,'' and is followed by John Huston's ``Fat City,'' with Stacy Keach and Jeff Bridges as a pair of boxers seeking escape from working the hot, dusty fields of Stockton.

GREAT GENE POOL: Gene Kelly soaking his oxfords. Debbie Reynolds singing and flapping. Donald O'Connor flirting with a dummy. Jean Hagen squeezing the phrase ``I keeeant steeeand 'im'' out through her nostrils.

If those scenes from ``Singin' in the Rain'' aren't vividly etched in your memory, it probably is time to see it again. One of Hollywood's best- loved musicals plays at 6 and 8 tonight at the landmark Warner Grand Theatre, 478 W. Sixth St. in San Pedro.
