FILM INFORMATION COUNCIL (FIC) VOTES UNIVERSAL AND AMBLIN ITS BEST MARKETED FILM AWARD FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hollywood-based Film Information Council (FIC), a 33-year-old organization of marketing, public relations and promotion executives with vast experience and expertise in the marketing, exhibition and distribution of motion pictures, has voted Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment its FIC Excellence in Film Marketing Award for the month of December 1993 for Steven Spielberg's motion picture "Schindler's List."
This is the second 1993 marketing award win for Universal Amblin. The two marketing departments also won last June for their collaborative marketing of "Jurassic Park." FIC started issuing monthly marketing acknowledgments to theatrical film distributors in 1992. The FIC award will be presented to principals of the marketing departments of Universal and Amblin at its next meeting.
Each month FIC Marketing Awards are announced for films opening during the previous month. Next week FIC will announce five nominees from among its 12 1993 monthly winners to compete for the organization's first annual award: The Film Information Council's Charles M. Powell Award for the Best Marketed Motion Picture of 1993. The winner, to receive a plaque highlighting its selection, will be announced Feb. 2 at Ma Maison Restaurant, Los Angeles, during FIC's first annual awards luncheon.
In announcing its selection of "Schindler's List," FIC noted the careful and nurturing handling and platform release of the film whose marketing approach was to screen the film and let it speak emotionally for itself among critics and the general audience. The organization was impressed by the film's first public screening held at the Holocaust Museum, in Washington, D.C., attended by President and Mrs. Clinton.
FIC was aware that even though the film is playing in a limited number of theaters, it opened with a 60 percent awareness level among moviegoers. The FIC members were also impressed by the film's sweep as Best Picture from the national critics awards -- Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Association, National Society of Film Critics and National Board of Review.
In the opinion of many FIC members, "Schindler's List" is a leading contender for Golden Globe and Academy Awards in major categories.
Other previous FIC marketing winners this year have been Miramax Films' "The Crying Game" and "The Piano" in January and November, respectively; Buena Vista's "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "The Joy Luck Club" in October and September, respectively; Warner Bros.' "The Fugitive" and "Free Willy" in August and July, respectively; TriStar's "Cliffhanger" in May; Paramount Pictures' "Indecent Proposal" in April; New Line Cinema's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in March; and Columbia Pictures' "Groundhog Day" for February.
Universal Pictures' "Schindler's List" is an Amblin Entertainment production starring Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Caroline Goodall, Jonathan Sagalle and Embeth Davidtz. Spielberg directed from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian. Spielberg produced with Gerald R. Molen and Branko Lustig. Co-producer is Lew Rywin. Executive producer is Kathleen Kennedy. Director of photography is Janusz Kaminski. John Williams wrote the film's score.
FIC was formed in 1960 as an informal group of movie marketing executives who met monthly to discuss matters relating to their trade. The organization conducted film marketing seminars at USC from 1978-84.
The roster of FIC members past and present includes some of the most celebrated names in film marketing. Today the organization is a vivid cross section of experienced movie marketing executives, versed in marketing, distribution, advertising, promotion, publicity, exhibition and agency work. FIC members have contributed their talents and marketing expertise on more than 10,000 films. FIC's Executive Chairman is Richard Kahn. Awards Chairman is Rusty Citron and Rick Markovitz is co-chairman.
