(1996) The Long Good Friday Channel 4/10pm/*** A WONDERFUL gritty drama, featuring a superb cast. A ruthless London crime lord tries to extend his underworld empire by joining forces with American business interests, but finds himself foiled at every turn by mysterious rivals. Bob Hoskins appears in one of his best-ever roles as the underworld hoodlum and is matched at every turn by Helen Mirren as his sexy mistress. (1980) TUESDAY Grumpy Old Men ITV/1am/*** OLD sparring partners Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon give great value for money in this delightful comedy about two Minnesota neighbours and arch-rivals who both fall for a beautiful widow. Matthau and Lemmon are on great form and there's superb support from Burgess Meredith who practically steals the show as Lemmon's salacious sa·la·cious adj. 1. A very engagingly performed slice of entertainment which also stars Ann-Margaret, Daryl Hannah and Kevin Pollak. (1993) WEDNESDAY The World Is Not Enough ITV/8.40pm*** PIERCE Brosnan returns for his third outing as James Bond and the action is as stylish and fast-moving as ever. Here the suave hero attempts to pacify pac·i·fy tr.v. pac·i·fied, pac·i·fy·ing, pac·i·fies 1. To ease the anger or agitation of. 2. To end war, fighting, or violence in; establish peace in. an international power struggle threatening the world's oil supply. This was Desmond Llewelyn's final film as Q and is a fitting tribute to the talented actor. Denise Richards, Robbie Coltrane, Judi Dench and John Cleese also star. (1999) The Russia House ITV/11.30pm/** WITH two strong A-list stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Sean Connery in the lead, this thriller should have been a lot stronger. The story, adapted from the John le Carre Noun 1. (1990) THURSDAY Ruthless People Channel 5/9pm/*** A HILARIOUS, over-the-top little number which gave Bette Midler and Danny DeVito arguably their best comedy roles to date. Midler stars as the victim of a kidnap plot hatched by an incompetent couple desperate for money. A very clever farce, written by Dale Launer, which has plenty of laughs and some bright performances. (1986). FRIDAY Predator ll Channel 4/10pm/** DANNY Glover takes over from Arnold Schwarzenegger in this bigbudget thriller which doesn't take itself too seriously. He plays a cop investigating the murder of local drug lords, and realises the prime suspect is not human. A fast-paced sequel with great production design and in-your-face action.
