Yee-ha!

In the American West of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, hundreds of African-American cowboys rode the range. But Hollywood all but ignored black cowboys.

In recent years, black actors have gained prominence in film and TV westerns, a trend being celebrated this weekend with the Reel Black Cowboy Film Festival at the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum.

The festival kicks off at 6:30 p.m. today with a celebrity VIP reception, including live music, food and art and photo exhibits, all for $25 per person.

On Saturday there will be screenings of 1999's ``Ride With the Devil'' with Jeffrey Wright and Tobey Maguire, and ``Buffalo Soldiers'' with Danny Glover and Glynn Turman. At 1:30 p.m., Turman, Blair Underwood and Obba Babatunde conduct a panel discussion on African-American actors in westerns.

Sunday's schedule includes showings of ``Thomasine & Bushrod'' with Max Julien and Turman, and John Ford's 1960 oater oat·er

'Blue' renewal

``The Big Blue,'' Luc Besson's 1988 drama about obsession and competition in the world of deep sea diving, is resurfacing today with a new director's cut.

In its first release, the film, starring Rosanna Arquette, Jean Reno and Jean-Marc Barr, garnered seven nominations for France's Cesar Awards. It received praise for its impressive Mediterranean underwater photography.

The new 35mm CinemaScope print includes almost an hour of never-before-seen footage and a new ending.

``The Big Blue'' opens today at the Laemmle Regent Showcase, 614. N. La Brea Ave. in Hollywood, and at the Laemmle Colorado, 2588 E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. For more information, call the Showcase at (323) 934-2944 or the Colorado at (626) 796-9704 or go to www.laemmle.com on the Web.
